Is it OK to ride a bicycle with a child?

Bicycles are Supposed to be for One person, But May carry Others in the Following Situation!

A Bicycle Equipped with an Auxiliary Seat for a Child is Allowed to Carry a Child

Bicycles designed to carry children are those which can carry two children safely because they are built to be sturdy; have mechanisms to stop shaking; are stable when parked; have strong frames and other major components; prevent shaking when being ridden; are stable when accelerating; and have other design advantages. Bicycles that fulfill these criteria are capable of carrying two children (under 6 years of age).

Bicycles designed to carry two children have a special construction and equipment necessary to accommodate mounting equipment for the driver and two child seats. Bicycles that are recognized to have these safety features display the “BAA Mark,” or the “SG Mark,” symbols indicating the bike is compliant with safety standards for carrying two children.

When is it possible for bicycles to carry children?

With ordinary bicycles

A rider of a bicycle who is 16 years or older may carry a single child of 6 years or younger if the bicycle has a child seat installed. ※ In addition to the above, the rider is permitted to carry another in a baby carrier.

When two children can be carried...

A rider of a bicycle who is 16 years or older may carry two children 6 years or younger if the bicycle is of a special construction or has equipment which enables the carrying of two children. ※ When carrying two children, the rider is not permitted to carry a third child in a baby carrier.

Points to keep in mind when getting your child(ren) on and off

    When getting only one child on

    Get the child on last,
    and get the child off first.

    The bicycle is firmly fixed , make the getting on and off of the child after carrying the cargo .

    When getting two children on, in front and back

    When getting them on, get the back one on first, and when getting them off, get the front one off first.

    When getting children in the front and back each, in order not to imbalance the bicycle, get the back one on first and get the front one off first.

    Make sure the children wear
    a helmet fitting to their head size.

    Choose a helmet of the child's head size and make sure it is worn properly. It should be worn with the front edge right above the eyebrows and horizontally straight from the front to the back. The chin strap should be fixed tight (but loose enough for one finger to be in at the throat).

Only children from age 1 to age 6 can ride together.

Some people carry a baby in the child seat, but a child should be at least one year old to be on the bicycle together. A child on a bicycle is obligated to wear a helmet, and from various perspectives, helmets must be worn "at least one year of age. Thus, a child should be at least "one year old" to be carried on a bicycle. During the ride, a child experiences wild shaking. Not all children should be carried on a bicycle simply because they are one year old, but their development and body structure should be considered before getting them on. A child allowed to be on a bicycle is a "preschooler." A preschooler is less than 6 years old. Only children younger than age 6 can be carried on a bicycle.

Violations when riding with a child

  1. 1. Riding a bicycle while holding a child is a violation in any situation.
  2. 2. Having one child on a child seat and carrying another child on the back while riding a bicycle other than a bicycle designed to carry two children, is a violation. Two children cannot be carried on a bicycle other than a bicycle designed to carry two children.
  3. 3. Having two children on a child seat of a bicycle other than a bicycle designed to carry two children is a violation.
  4. 4. Having two children sit on the child seats of a bicycle designed to carry two children and carrying another child on the back, is a violation. Up to two children can be carried on a bicycle designed to carry two children.
